Regularly servicing your car can be the difference between your car running smoothly with excellent fuel efficiency, and the increased risk of breaking down and incurring expensive repair costs. Having a car that is regularly serviced and maintained will certainly save you the pain, hassle and expense later on.
Unfortunately, some motorists are unaware of the importance of regularly servicing their cars and often wait until it’s well overdue or until it’s too late and their cars have broken down. Regular servicing is just as important as carrying out your MOT and is crucial in keeping your car on the road.
If you’d like to find out the different types of car servicing available and how often you should book each, please carry on reading.
Types of Car Servicing Available
There are three types of car servicing available: a full service, an interim service and a basic service. The type of service you require will depend on how regularly you drive your car and when your full service is due.
Full Service
As you would expect, a full service is the main type of service, and covers the most checks. The full service includes a 71-point check and identifies any maintenance that may be required on your car, with a full check of your vehicle’s components.
As a full service is more extensive than an interim or basic service, we do recommend that this is booked once a year or every 10,000 miles – whichever comes first.
Interim Service
An interim service is designed for cars with high mileage or those that are used on a very regular basis. It consists of an oil change, an oil filter replacement and a comprehensive 69-point check of the major components that are likely to need attention.
The important thing to remember is that an interim service should not be used as a replacement for a full service. Instead,it’s crucial to have an interim service every six months, between your annual full service.
Basic Service
The basic service is the third type of service and is designed for the everyday driver. It helps to prolong the life of your engine and is necessary in keeping the engine clean. This type of service also keeps the internal moving components of your engine clean and lubricated.
This type of service is usually recommended every six months. As with the interim service, the basic service is not a replacement for a full service.
How Regularly Should I Service My Car?
Your car will need to be serviced at least every six months, with a full service once a year or according to your manufacturer’s recommendation every 10,000 miles. However, there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to car servicing, so your car may need servicing more regularly.
We do advise you to check your owner’s manual for exact guidance on how regularly you should service your car, as it will contain recommendations made by your manufacturer.
Of course, if you do clock up more miles than average, we do advise servicing your car more frequently. This is why it may be worth discussing with your mechanic, who will be able to provide a more accurate timeframe.
How Much Does a Car Service Cost?
The exact cost will vary depending on your make/model, engine size and your fuel type. Our basic service starts from £99, the interim service starts from £149 and the full service starts from £199.
